Second apartment fire at Carriage Hills

Second apartment fire at Carriage Hills, Meridian Twp

Ok, so, right now one of the townhouses in my apartment complex is burning down within sight of my own building. There are dozens of police, ambulances, and fire trucks all around the area, blocking streets off. There were two ladder trucks putting the fire out. We’re in Meridian Township, but Lansing and East Lansing fire departments were also called in to assist. The blaze started at around 10:45 according to someone who lived right across – I did not get home till about midnight after watching 28 Days Later at the NCG. As of about 12:30 it appeared to be pretty much out, the ladders were down and it looked like they were packing it up. No word yet on the source, or if there were any injuries.

This would probably not concern me quite so much if another similar townhouse hadn’t burned down in our complex earlier this month, as reported on here in the LSJ. Two major fires in about three weeks in the same complex. The first displaced 10 and caused over $400,000 in damage. It looked suspicious at the time, possibly arson, but so far no more news.

Is it time to move I ask? Is there a serial arsonist with a beef against Carriage Hills? Is my renters insurance up to date?

Update 6/29/03

Quick correction, there were actually two fires in Carriage Hills before this one, making it three in about a month, not two. The local NBC channel ran some footage on the news today, although still nothing in the LSJ. The news didn’t report anything useful, so I guess we just keep waiting.

Update 6/30/03

The LSJ has a little more coverage here, nothing useful except now the fire dept has ruled all three fires as suspected arson.

Update 7/1/03

So today we got a newsletter from the complex management – some typical stuff: tips for preventing fires and such. Most importantly, that they have hired some additional security to patrol at night. Good to know anyway.
