MSU’s Broad MBA now 2nd tier

October 12th, 2004

Faculty and staff at Michigan State’s Broad MBA school are surely in a tizzy over this: the full time program dropped in the critical Business Week rankings from #23 (first tier schools) to a lousy #42 putting it near the bottom of second tier schools. Here is the schools official statement. #1 - new faculty and staff. A questionable step, smacks of pointless ‘housecleaning’ effort. My problem was rarely with the professors who seemed quite competent overall, more the structure of classes and foolish buzzword laden program goals. I agree talent is needed in the strategy arena, more than any of the others mentioned. #2 - alumni access. Sounds pretty good right? We’ll see. #3 - new lounge. Oh yeah, that’s really gonna help.

I don’t mind in the least admitting I was probably one of the inputs that dragged down the ranking. With a n=100 or so in the sample, I was glad to know my input would make a difference, and clearly it did. The funny thing is none of it even concerns the fact that I still don’t have a job after graduation (some might think I’m bitter). I gave the PCC high marks overall, it was the class structure that I hit hardest. Although it’s worth noting that while the PCC was instrumental in my internship, they have done virtually nothing to help me in full time placement. Heck, they even stopped emailing already to ’see how I’m doing’ periodically. Try not to act surprised.
