Vanderbilt or Bust!
June 23rd, 2005So, I missed out on the early UnGolf activities which included repeatedly falling into the Au Sable River. Shame. Made the trip from Okemos to Gaylord (~173 miles) in record time of roughly 57 minutes. Watched the Pistons choke at the Big Buck.
Friday: high temperatures in Michigan were over 120 degrees, and I managed a 102 at The Natural. The snowman showed his ugly face early on the cruel par 5 first hole. Lost balls: at least a dozen. Totalled carts: zero.
Saturday: cooler, overcast conditions make for ideal golfing weather. Game improves markedly for a 97 at the Black Bear. Still, should have been better. After staying within 1 stroke of GP and Scott through 9, I lost it on several back 9 holes and ended up 10 strokes off the coveted lead. Should have easily had an extra 2 strokes if I hadn’t blown a certain gimmee birdie putt. Totalled carts: still zero! We were unable to know for sure if the Black Bear has gotten out of receivership at this point. Thankfully alcohol is back on the menu. The course is still poorly maintained, with serious green degradation. Fairways are ok, but small as it is. Several sand bunkers have been abandoned as grass bunkers. Still tough to beat the price though. The Natural was much nicer. Dinner at The Gobbler.
All in all, a successful 6th UnGolf. I was generally pleased with my golf game, despite my lack of regular play. Despite a few massive blow-ups, I played it smart most of the time with a number of nice pars, a few birdie putts, and some sweet saves. The UnGolf titles shall one day be mine!
