Happy 4th of July!
July 4th, 2005Tahquamenon Falls State Park has to be one of the nicest Michigan campsites I’ve been two. It’s in da UP so its a drive, but worth it. We stayed at the lower falls, semi-modern site which I highly recommend. The sites are arrayed along the Tahquamenon river, so you aren’t packed in like sardines as at most sites. The sites are right on the river, and mostly covered by very dense pine trees adding to the privacy level lacking in the modern sites. You get the best of both worlds here as well since you can take a short walk or ride to the modern site right next door if you want a hot shower. From our site you could fish right from your lot, you can’t beat that!
Sunday drove to the lower falls and hiked to the upper falls. This was quite the workout, be warned! It is rated as a medium difficulty trail, and is 8 miles round trip, but with about a mile to each trailhead its really more like a 10 mile round trip. We averaged about 2 miles per hour for a little over 4 hours total hike time. This is a tough walk, many people were turning back after reaching the first mile marker. Many making it to the end could be heard commenting it was the toughest 4 miles they ever walked. The trail follows the river partly, but goes up and down the many hills in between. The trail was well groomed overall, but some sections were overgrown and a few of the bridges were questionable. It was a good workout and I thought a lot of fun, but don’t underestimate it if you do go sometime.
