Sebring Unveiled

June 27th, 2006

Hollywood can keep its glittery, star studded movie premiers. This is DETROIT. And the Motown equivalent is this: the new car model press introduction!!! This is what working in the crazy auto biz is all about. Sure the domestic industry is in a downward spiral of overcapacity and galloping health care costs, but the chance to attend an event like this is priceless.

This intro was a bit more low key than most of DCX’s, which usually involve a vehicle smashing through plate glass or being dropped by a helicopter. But still, they did something special which was feature 200 or so employees who actually build the new car.

Here’s a link to a site featuring the video feed of the reveal and a good picture of our fearless leader Tom LaSorda extolling the car’s many virtues.

The styling is classy, and the interior is a major improvement. There are a lot of fairly high end luxury amenities available as well, especially for what is a mid-market car. The 20GB digital audio center sounds outstanding, and every sound system features a MP3 jack, something I think is long overdue from all the automakers. This should be standard across the fleet, not just one model. I’m very anxious to see an SRT version of the JS - a blown 6 and a manual tranny - and they can pretty much guarantee my order.
