Thanksgiving 2006 Wrap-up

November 27th, 2006

Well, another Thanksgiving and another awesome 4-day weekend draws to a close.

Thanksgiving day involved not one, but two turkey dinners to accommodate the family.  Not really a problem as both were located in Warren, unless you consider pacing yourself to fit two consecutive turkey dinners in your stomach at once a problem.  Dinner at Dad’s place about 2, Mark arrived just as we were diving into the turkey, right on time I suppose.  Lions lost, badly.  Off to Aunt Carolyn’s for dinner #2, approximately 5pm.  Everything was delicious as always.  Jenny’s proposal for an evening casino run found little support.  Ended up playing 31 instead, though I failed to claim victory in either of two rounds.

Somehow we got it in our heads to try and make an extra early sale at CompUSA about 11:30pm but were thwarted by an insane line that wrapped around the entire store.  Not sure but I think they only had a single lane open.

Friday continued the tradition of all out Movie Marathon!  Took in three total flicks: Casino Royale, The Fountain, and For Your Consideration.  Mike took off after Casino Royale, Steve stayed on for all three, and Dave showed up for the last feature.  Actually, since Dave arrived late he and Steve ended up continuing the marathon with at least one more movie.  So I guess technically Steve was the Marathon champ of this years event.

Saturday’s gorgeous weather required me to head out to Burchfield for my last last last ride of 2006.   Actually I have to give up on that whole topic, who knows how many more rides may get squeezed in yet this year if I end up with some better cold weather gear and a light for the bike.  Plus, I happened across a thread on the MMBA forum describing a brand spanking new trail being opened in Milan at Sanford Park!  This is super cool since this is literally right on my way home from work.  Brighton and Maybury are sort of on my route but required considerable non-freeway drive time which really bites into my total travel time.  So I am quite excited to see this trail coming online.

Finally today the Conley’s came over to visit, primarily for Jane to pass on the super secret Marvin Sugar Cookie recipie to Sarah.  We also picked up our skis from Summit Sports - awesome!  Now we just need some snow…

Last Last ride of 2006

50 degrees in late November, sent home early from work day before Thanksgiving, what else am I going to do but hit Murray Lake on the long drive home for some cool weather riding?  Its surprisingly easy to lose the trail in the fall when all the trees are empty and the path is covered with leaves.  Oh well, who knows, if this nice weather sticks around, may get out yet again.  Although, I have to race out of work just to make it to the trail while its still light out.  Pretty soon it will no longer be an option.  Unless I get a nice headlight for the bike…hmmmm…

This is the coolest thing ever

I have to say this is way cool, and a little freaky. Sarah pointed out this video of a blind teen who uses echolocation to see!

Last ride of 2006

November 13th, 2006

Hooray, I had the day off work today for Veteran’s Day. Had some delicious Mediterranean food at Sultan’s over in Hannah Plaza near campus with Sarah for lunch. And since the weather was good (meaning not raining or snowing) I decided to go for one last bike ride over at Burchfield. It was a brisk 37 degrees, as opposed to the forecast which predicted mid to upper 40s. Still, once I got going I warmed up. Trail was dry enough considering the amount of rain and snow we’ve had recently, and despite being leaf covered traction was good. So that will probably be my last outdoor ride for the season.
